To be successful in learning sequence activities, it is imperative at the verbal association level of skill learning sequence—when associating syllables and names with tonal patterns and rhythm patterns—students learn to audiate and perform tonal patterns using appropriate tonal syllables and rhythm patterns using appropriate rhythm syllables. They need not and ought not be taught music theory or how to read music notation first. Clearly, it is unnecessary for students to understand music theory or music notation to achieve at the verbal association level. When pitch letter-names and time-value names or any other tonal system or rhythm system lacking practical internal logic is used for purposes of verbal association, music theory and notation inevitably negate and supplant audiation.
