There exist numerous examples of much later varieties in Sung and Ming painting ,of course ,and we illustrate one cut from a Ming illustrated primer now in the Library of Congress ,in Washington ,dated as of the early sixteenth century ,that by this time gives an altogether familiar effect .The cut illustrates two models that can be dated as 1609 .Thus ,in general ,by Ming times we are on solid ground .
