The personal genomics and biotechnology company 23andMe applies DNA sequencing technologies to the spittle of its customers. They learn things about their propensities for certain diseases and facts about their ancestry. Much of the value of 23andMe lies in its accumulation of the genetic information of, as of April 2017, two million customers.39 The accumulation of this information in digital form permits powerful analytical tools to be applied to it. 23andMe passes on to its customers discoveries about DNA made elsewhere. But it is increasingly able to use its database to make its own discoveries.
