A detachment member can judge his distance from a thunderstorm by knowing that light travels at about 186,000 miles per second and sound at about 1,100 feet per second (or about 1 mile in 5 seconds). If he times how long the sound of the thunder takes to reach him after he sees the lightning flash, he can roughly estimate the distance to the storm.
