In considering the USCOB’s request, USAREUR planners recognized that if SF elements were pre-positioned in Berlin before hostilities, they would be “behind the lines” even before hostilities began. Better still, theywould have time to prepare for a possible Soviet D-Day while in their operational area. The unit’s mission was for its six SF teams to conduct direct action missions against rail, road, and canal infrastructure in and around Berlin before beginning unconventional warfare (UW) operations.12 A key element of these operations was to report via long-range, high-frequency radio on enemy locations, activities, and movements to enable NATO air strikes against them.13
