John 19:26-27 shows how Christ provided His mother with comfort in giving her into the care of His disciple John. Blum notes that the crucifixion of Christ was Simeon’s prophecy fulfilled in which Mary’s heart would be pierced. This suggests that Mary was grieving over the suffering of her son. “Seeing her sorrow, Jesus honored His mother by consigning her into the care of John, the beloved disciple.” The crucifixion of Christ offers the pastoral care provider a tool that can be used to encourage the bereaved to support one another.
