E.coli, known as escherichia coli discovered by Eschelic in 1885, has long been considered to be part of the normal intestinal flora and to be a non-pathogenic bacterium. By the middle of the 20th century, specific serotypes of e. coli were pathogenic to humans and animals, especially infants and young animals (poultry), often causing severe diarrhea and sepsis.
