Moreover, he demonstrated a remarkable understanding of the potential of aeronautics when he wrote: “Somewhere, we know, there should be a ‘terminal velocity’ governed by the head resistance of the airplane and the power available to drive it. When this point is reached, however, it is probable that the wings of the airplane will have mostly disappeared, it being presumed that sufficient lift to support the craft in the air will be provided at such great speeds with an extremely small amount of surface.”55
