It would be necessary for the novelist, if this man were his character, or the psychotherapist, if he were his patient, to wonder how this precipitous change would fit into a life which must take past and future into account. That's where good drama parts company with mere inflation. Some hint would be expected presaging the change——dreams of surprise and adventure, a sense of lifelong personal confinement from which the man is surging to be released,a supportable belief that he can pull this change off, a willingness to bet his life to rescue himself from the mundane.
