In giving lessons in grammar, our first aim is to arouse new interest in the children. Dr. Montessori says, for example, that if a child goes out for a walk, he sees trees, and he sees, superficially, that trees have leaves. However, if he has had a lesson on the shapes of leaves and the various kinds, he will see the trees differently. This is because he has more knowledge. It is the same with language. If children have been given the knowledge of words and their function, they will view language differently, with more knowledge and appreciation.
