Those individuals, military and civilian, men and women, senior and junior in rank, were selected to achieve particular results. Each relationship was unique; some were much more familiar than others. Each commander’s abilities were distinct, and everyone, at all levels, reacted differently to the tremendous pressure of war. For Hap Arnold, winning the war transcended personal feelings. Most of his commanders understood that his reactions to unachieved goals and shattered expectations were nothing personal.
