The steels are essentially the alloy of iron and carbon, with other elements that occur naturally in iron ore or result from processing. These elements are held to certain maximum levels: manganese (Mn). 1.65%; Silicon (Si). 0.60%; and copper (Cu), 0.60%. Carbon steel may be cast or wrought. Typically, cast steels have more uniform properties since wrought steel develops directional properties as a result of rolling it into shape.
