Polymer or compound Processing is defined as the “engineering specialty concerned with the operations carried out on polymeric or compound materials or systems to increase their utility”. Primarily it deals with the conversion of polymeric raw materials into finished products.Compound Processability is a general term describing the behavior and the interactions of polymer, filler, oil and additives during processing ( mixing, shaping and vulcanization ). It is dependent on the rheological properties of a rubber ( compound as well as the cure characteristics ).Processability includes such parameters as the power required to incorporate filler and oils during mixing operation, extrusion output rates, die swell, dimensional stability, product uniformity, surface finish, scorch time and cure characteristics.Process Equipment : mixing equipment, extruders and calenders are basic processing machines used in rubber production.Internal mixers or open roll mills break down the elastomers and incorporate selected ingredients.Extruders shape rubber compounds for assembling with other components for tire building and mechanical goods.Calenders are used for sheeting and combining with fabrics and wires.
