6.1. General operationIn this section we show the main response of the system under thedirection of the first EMS for various sizes of the accumulators in orderto see their effect on the overall performance. This analysis serves as thebasis for the more inclusive study in Section 6.2. In order to usemeaningful sizes for the accumulators we will define them based onhours of autonomy. The following scenarios were investigated:1. Battery size (BAT): 30 h, Water Tank size (WT): 48 h, HydrogenTank size (FT): 48 h2. Battery size (BAT): 60 h, Water Tank size (WT): 96 h, HydrogenTank size (FT): 96 h3. Battery size (BAT): 288 h, Water Tank size (WT): 480 h, HydrogenTank size (FT): 480 h.In Fig. 5 we see the response of the three accumulators for the firstset of parameters, which are also used in Table 2. In this case with asmall hydrogen tank the DSL was activated 342 times, and 143 times aload was prevented from being activated. In scenario 2 (Fig. 6), wherethe sizes of the accumulators are doubled, the DSL was activated 216times and 120 times a load was stopped from being activated. This isexpected due to the increased size of the battery that gives more spacefor the electrical energy to be stored but also for the increased size ofthe FT which allows us to use the EL more and hence produce moreHydrogen. By further increasing the size of the accumulators to unrealistic values (scenario 3) it was observed that the DSL was neveractivated. Again this explained by the fact that the increased size allowsus to store more energy and then use it during the winter months.Having said that, the most useful result from this analysis is the importance of each accumulator as for example if the WT is empty (seeFig. 5) and the hydrogen is depleted, even if there is a surplus of energythe EL cannot be used in order to produce energy. Another interestingresult (but not realistic) is that, if all accumulators are completely full,the FC and the EL will never be activated. In the next section, we willbetter analyse the system’s response under 20 different EMS by keepingthe original size of the accumulators.
