However, a simple demonstration experiment can convince students that light cannot be seen when it travels. That is, they cannot see such a thing as beam of light. All they can see is the source of light and what light ‘hits’. And this can be indeed a shock of awareness (Hadzigeorgiou, 2012). All that is required is a shoe box and a flashlight. The shoe box must have a hole on one of its sides and a small hole (the size of an eye) on its top side. The first hole is needed for the light of the flashlight to shine (travel) through, while the hole on the top side is used by students to look inside the dark box. As soon as the flashlight is placed and fitted in the hole and is turned on, the students can peer through the hole on the top side and see that there is no such thing as a light beam but only two bright spots, that is, the source of light and the small area on the opposite side of the box. No light can be seen in between these two bright spots.
