We have reached a point where a number of disciplines are beginning to converge, where various orientations, developments, and interests are meeting in an effort to achieve a common understanding of the nature of mental health and illness (although with little agreement as yet). And public health workers appear to be coming to grips with their responsibilities in this area: An increasing number of public health workers are beginning to devote their attention to the identification of data which can actually be drawn upon, in terms of more or less precise categories and bodies of knowledge, for the content of mental health teaching in schools of public health. The efforts of public health workers have also been directed towards there solution of the many uncertainties which characterize the field, in terms of the prevalence and incidence of mental disorder and its aetiology, and the development of effective research methodologies.
