How are fires put out? We have learned that a fire must have fuel, air and heat to burn. If one of these is taken away, the fire will stop. Here are the methods: 1. Remove the fuel – This could include actions such as turning off gas, removing anything that might burn from the area of the fire or pumping flammable liquids away from a burning tank. Although fires can be put out this way, your fire plan will not name this as part of your responsibilities. 2. Cut off the oxygen – This is when you smother the fire and cut off its air supply. An example is putting a lid on a frying pan of burning grease. 3. Lower the temperature – When you take away the heat, the fuel is cooled below its burning temperature and the fire stops. This is usually done by throwing water on the fire, but this isn’t always a safe thing to do. You will learn more about this later in the unit.
