Underlying macrobeats and microbeats To establish and maintain context of meter, macrobeats and microbeats are continuously felt in audiation regardless of organization of rhythm patterns they support. Whether or not they are accented in performance, macrobeats and microbeats provide structure for audiating anacruses, cruses, and metacruses. Importance of audiating, not simply counting, paired and unpaired macrobeats cannot be overemphasized. Students who do not audiate consistent tempo and meter tend to count relative lengths of individual durations in rhythm patterns they see written in notation as an alternative. Counting does not ensure consistent tempo or stable meter, and accenting macrobeats as aid to counting renders unmusical performance. In point, many persons erroneously believe 3/4 has three macrobeats in a measure because they were taught to think about measure signatures in terms of arithmetic and to count rather than to audiate.
