Sidney Caton is an impressively tragic figure, and I think he is the closest person to the real Dickens described in this book. He unreservedly "would do anything for you and your loved ones", he seized every opportunity to "make any sacrifices for you and your loved ones". He loves Lucy deeply and does not ask for anything in return. He just hopes that Lucy can "remember such a person from time to time" and that Lucy will remember herself. This also hints at the ending of Caton's final sacrifice for love, laying the groundwork for the following. In the end, Caton replaced Dani on the guillotine, using blood and life to fulfill his promise of love to Lucy.
