Here indeed is a curious paradox. Possessors of AP, and well-trained non possessors, relying only on relative pitch with an available reference note, have equal performance levels at random-tone identification and report practically the same subjective sensations, and yet this parallel completely breaks down with music, which makes use of these same tones. Is it conceivable that there are two completely different mechanisms opera ting, one called relative pitch, which all people seem capable of possessing, and an additional note-identification structure available to the chosen few?
