Fillers can be granular, discontinuous, or continuous fibrous, and fibers can be directed in one or more specific directions, or they can be fully oriented. Mixing with different fillers is possible. For example, concrete is used in combination with sandtod to make different degrees of granularity in order to obtain a higher total filler volume fraction. Fine particles fill the space between large particles (Figure 1.12), resulting in the total fill volume not being filled by using a single type of filler. In another example, carbon fiber and polymer fibers are used together in polymer-based composites for a balanced combination of high toughness (provided by polymer fibers) and high modulus (provided by carbon fiber). These two fibers can be in the same layer, can also be in different composite layers, when they are in the same layer, can be in the same pre-immersion layer, can also be in the same pre-immersion layer, can also be in the same pre-immersion layer. An example of a mixture of substrates is a mixture of carbon and silicon carbide, for example, a mixture of carbon and silicon carbide that is thermally dissolved from a mixture of carbon precursors and silicon carbide. The mixture of carbon and silicon carbide is more resistant to oxidation than carbon substrates.
