Spiritual assessmentSpiritual screeningThe purpose of the spiritual screening is to look for spiritual “red flegs” that could signal a spiritual crisis, and consequently, a patient in need of further assessment and treatment by a board-certified chaplain or other spiritual care professional. The spiritual screening is vitally important as it frequently serves as the gateway to the discussion of spiritual issues. As mentioned in the barrier section, many clinicians choose not to discuss issues of spirituality due to discomfort, lack of training, or perceived lack of time. A good spiritual screening is ideally suited to confront these obstacles, as it involves very little additional training beyond what most healthcare professionals receive. The screening is meant to be brief. It utilizes only a few questions, and is usually done by the nurse who does the intake interview.
