So nearly all the chairs here illustrated have a front stretcher designed to serve as a footrest ;and this ,even though other proportions of are slightly smaller than for Westerners ,often brings the height of the seat a trifle above what is now normal with us .Even if no special rest is provided ,it was once quite customary to use shallow ,hardwood footstools .Chair were made to be drawn up to tables ,of course ,thus further affecting the customary height of the table which ,in general ,is also a little higher than in the West .An exception is the ordinary dining table with stools ,for ,as we have seen ,informal varieties of the latter are comparatively low ,and the table that goes with them is therefore often in proportion ,especially in humble settings .
