The largest study to date evaluating fluid administration and outcomes in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock was recently published. This was a retrospective cohort study that used the 2013 Premier Hospital Discharge database to evaluate 23 513 patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. Unlike previously mentioned studies, this study assessed the amount of IV fluid these patients received on day 1 of their hospital admission as opposed to day 1 of their ICU stay.
