Mechanisms through which disintegrants break dosage forms up into smaller parts includeswelling, heat generation due to increased interaction between particles, exothermic wicking action,particle repulsion and recovery of particle deformation. The swelling mechanism entails that theparticles of the disintegrant swell and expand when exposed to moisture. This will cause the neighboringparticles to be pushed away causing expansion of the dosage form leading to its disintegration. It isimportant to ensure sufficient voids in the dosage form when formulating with a swelling disintegrantto allow enough moisture to enter into the dosage form to initiate the swelling process [23].
