Cultural Diversity In Volunteering: Is It Worth Pursuing?
What is culture?
Culture is an overall concept. It's the way we greet friends or a stranger. It's how we disciplin
our children, how we educate them, and what we consider polite and rude, right and wrong. 16
People in the world may do many of these same things but they do them in different ways and th
is their culture
Why increase diversity in your volunteer program?
7 If yes, do you know how to meet your clients(2F) needs? You may be missing or
on significant parts of the population because your organization has very little idea on how to identi
and meet the needs of people from all these different regions. Building a strong, diverse volunte
program that mirrors your community will mean your organization is much better placed to reach pec
ple who need or would value your services.
When organizations are strongly mono- cultural(单一文化的), their internal environments are
often not inclusive of people from other cultures. 19 This diversification can improve your public
profile and help you to better serve clients by being responsive to their needs
Making diversity work.
You will need to take the needs of the volunteers into account. You may be dealing with people
who do not have a concept of what volunteering is, who think they will get paid work from voluntee
ring, who speak very little English or who find it very difficult to say no. 20
