Nevertheless, as a psychological funnel for heightening attention, the here-and-now has served an important purpose. It helped to close the psychological distance between each person and life events. While trying to get into the present, one was incidentally impelled to get inside one's own experience. One found that what matters most is what is happening, with whom it is happening, how it is happening, when it is happening, how one feels about what is happening, and especially, what are the consequences of what is happening. The therapist will be more tuned in to fundamentals,though,in guiding a patient directly to that person's function and awareness rather than to "living in the present. " Then the narrow band of experience created by high focus leads a person forward like an airplane homing in on the exact radio beam.
