This happened even to Fritz Perls himself, the originator of Gestalt therapy. In his early theorizing he described the present as "an ever moving zero point of the opposite past and future"still recognizing the past and future as live reference points for the present. Though he never actually changed his mind, one would not know this by reading his later aphorisms about the present. Whereas in his actual therapeutic work he was a master at leading people into reenactments of early life experiences, so vividly restored as to feel almost like a trip in a time capsule, he nevertheless was moved to write in Gestalt Therapy Now:
