Such generalizations are in no sense random but have a logic. They result in a synthesis that is closely argued to uphold a purpose. In what follows we shall consider that synthesis and its purpose, as well as Thucydides' chronology and its relationship to his purpose in writing the Archaeology. But first, what was he attempting to demonstrate in that synthesis, if such a term is not too strong?
