A small number of women on Mango Street show a new self-consciousness of Hispanic women, but the weakness of gender determines the life course of their daughter, wife and mother. Esperanza, the protagonist, refuses to accept such a fate. Although she "inherits the name of her great grandmother", she is determined not to "inherit her position by the window".
