Howard and colleagues (2003) found that infants who did not receive any formula supplements breastfed on average for 101 days compared with a median of 31-49 days for infants who were fed formula supplements in the hospital, and Ingram and colleagues (2002) report that breastfed babies given any other fluid (water or formula) while in the hospital were more than twice as likely to discontinue breastfeeding by 2 weeks of age than babies that were not given any other fluids.
