During the layoff meeting, managers should communicate the message unambiguously andwith compassion. If the layoff decision is a permanent one, employees should be advisedthat they won’t be called back to work; if there is a possibility for rehire, they should be advised of the time frame in which that may occur. Employees should be given adequatetime to gather personal items prior to leaving but shouldn’t be allowed to hang aroundindefinitely, because this negatively impacts productivity and is hard on the morale ofemployees who will be staying with the organization. Once the termination meetings havebeen conducted, it’s important that management meet with the remaining employees toanswer questions and provide reassurance.
