Since we do turtle transects only in the early morning or just past dusk, we have lots of time to kill. Lots. So we murder it aplenty by playing uncountable rounds of Travel Scrabble and cards as well as reading to our hearts’ content. If I had my druthers, I’d pretty much spend every hour of every day reading (such days were my favorite parts of college). We sit in this ecotone—jungle behind, ocean ahead—and watch the waves forge up the sand, the tide go out, the vultures pick around the debris. We watch the troop of squirrel monkeys feed on the cashew fruit tree, the large beach ants following one another over their sandy mountains, the lizards lying in the sand and soaking in the heat from below and above. We watch the shadows of the rainforest trees slowly grow toward the sea until they are swallowed up by the end of another day.
