WHMIS As a security guard you should not have to work directly with hazardous materials. However, you have the right to know about the ones that are used at your site, as you may be exposed to them while you are on patrol or dealing with issues on the site. Your duties may include receiving deliveries or guarding an area where hazardous materials are stored. The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) was set up to protect workers who work with or near hazardous materials. WHMIS requires employers to • label containers of hazardous material. • provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) with information about the hazardous material. • provide workers with training about how to work safely with the hazardous material.
