1.3 porous nickel electrode for hydrogen evolution
Porous nickel materials include two kinds of Raney nickel and nickel foam. In 1920s, Raney found that Ni Al (Ni Zn) alloy dissolved Al in alkaline solution. As the most classical porous electrode, Raney Ni electrode has been used up to now. However, in the preparation of Raney Ni electrode, high-purity Raney Ni alloy is needed as raw material to ensure its high activity and stability. Some need plasma equipment and high temperature and pressure conditions to increase the preparation cost. In addition, there are still problems such as weak anti reverse current ability of Raney Ni electrode, and the electrode catalytic components are easy to dissolve under long-time power failure, which leads to the decrease of electrode activity [27]
Nickel foam is mainly used for battery electrode materials, especially for NiMH batteries. Nickel foam is also one of the best electrode materials for manufacturing cadmium nickel batteries and hydrogen nickel batteries. The process of preparing nickel foam by electrodeposition technology has been successfully developed through experiments. The matrix material used is porous porous foamed plastic, and the conductive layer can be prepared by three methods, namely, electroless nickel plating, vacuum nickel plating and immersion conductive adhesive. Nickel is plated into the common sulphate nickel plating electrolyte, and then thick nickel is plated. After the ignition, reduction and annealing process, the nickel foam material with excellent performance can be obtained.
