A further explanation for these counterintuitive results was proposed by Micheyl et al. (2006a,b) who suggested that the random variability of neural responses to auditory stimuli may render the different representations of identical stimuli as qualitatively different, and this may be sufficient to fine tune the relevant stimulus comparison process necessary for perceptual learning.
