At present, non-toxic, environmental protection, excellent performance of heavy metal flocculant research and development has become one of the hot spots in the field of water treatment flocculants. Starch-modified flocculants, as environmentally friendly, economically good and easy-to-degrade natural green flocculants, have received wide attention in heavy metal wastewater treatment. This review summarizes the sources and hazards of heavy metal pollution, systematically expounds the physical and chemical modification of starch, highlights the common chemical modification methods of starch flocculation co-polymerization, crosslinking, etherization and esterification, and elaborates the mechanism of removing heavy metal ions. Finally, the development trend of starch modified flocculants is also looked forward.
