这种室内与室外、室内自身的物质能量交换作用，对室内环境的优劣产生了直接的影响。我们今天所倡导的绿色设计理念，有必要从生态学的观点，从满足人体基本的生理与心理需要为着眼点，探索室内开放性生态系统的物质流动与能量流动过程，并从室内设计及装饰构造做法等方面实现室内环境的良性循环，创造出舒适宜人的、节能环保的、绿色的室内环境。室内光环境是通过能量流动的方式在室内与室外、室内之间进行光能流动而形成，即室内的光能主要来自室外的天然光和室内的人工照明。从环保、节能以及有利于人眼视觉工作等方面考虑，我们认为天然光是一种更为绿色的光环境。那种只强调人工光源的灯光效果，对可利用的自然光不充分应用，绝不能说是一种节能的室内设计，更不能说是一种绿色的室内设计。绿色的室内设计，首先应探索人体对室内环境的需求是什么，这些需求除了社会方面的、文化方面的以及心理方面的外，更为重要的是人体生理方面的需要。我认为绿色的室内环境首先应是环保的、健康舒适的室内环境。
