There are two main views on politeness: one is politeness in principle and maxim; the other is politeness as the management of face to face. Brown and Levinson's theory of universal politeness is still comprehensive and influential in linking social and psychological parameters with language strategies, but it is not acceptable without different voices. This reflects the different approaches to the study of politeness, one of which is the common phenomenon and cultural customs. On the one hand, some principles behind politeness behavior are universal across cultures; on the other hand, specific cultural factors must be taken into account.
