All sociodemographic and clinical factors found to be related to body image, psychopathology, and QOL in a bivariate analysis were tested using a regression model to determine which were the most important correlates . Stoma status was the strongest factor associated with body image, distress, and depression . There was a significant effect of age on body image : younger age was associated with poorer body image. There was a significant effect of stoma status on body image : permanent stoma was associated with poorer body image. There was also a significant effect of clinical stage on body image : later clinical stage was associated with poorer body image. Table 4 shows the mediation results. Body image had a significant indirect effect on distress in PS relative to NS , suggesting full mediation. The effect of body image on distress in TS suggested partial mediation. Body image had a significant indirect effects on anxiety, depression, and GQL in PS and TS relative to NS, indicating full mediation.
