The armature winding in this case(Fig.14-1)is only a single N-turn coil and is indicated in cross section by the two coil sides a and—a placed in diametrically opposite narrow slots on the inner periphery of the stator,The conductors forming these coil sides are parallel to the shaft of the machine and are connected in series by end connections(not shown in the figure).The rotor is rotating at a constant speed driven by a prime mover connected to its shaft. When the armature winding is open, the flux in this machine is produced by the field winding alone. Flux paths are shown schematically by dashed lines inFig.14-1.
