Although breastfeeding is a personal experience, the decisions to initiate and continue breastfeeding are guided by one’s norms,13 and influenced by the explicit or implicit opinions of others in one’s social network regarding the pros and cons of breastfeeding and the optimal duration of breastfeeding.15 The influence of these norms varies by individual. For instance, a first-time mother may be more influenced by a norm than a multiparous mother who has previous experience with either breast or formula feeding.
