Bloating is common in patients with gastroparesis (over 50%; 22) and those with smallbowel dysmotility (e.g., chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) and scleroderma). Aprospective study of over 2,000 patients with functional constipation and IBS-C demonstratedthat over 90% reported symptoms of bloating (23). In IBS-C patients, those with prolongedcolonic transit were shown to have greater abdominal distension compared to patients withnormal transit (24). Patients with functional bloating and IBS have impaired gas clearance fromthe proximal colon, but normal colonic accommodation to gas infusion (25).
