Planned Shutdown Logic – Gas Compression1. Remove or reduce the load to minimum for two minutes. Remove the load by disengaging the main clutchor other power transmission device; or, by placing the throttle control lever in the medium idle speedposition or reducing the compressor suction pressure. Unloading the engine allows the exhaust valves,pistons and turbochargers to cool down before stopping, reducing or preventing thermal warpage and heatsoak.NOTE: Shutdown of a hot engine causes heat soak on the intake manifold. Operating the engine fortwo minutes will flow enough mixture across the intake manifold safety device to cool it belowthe shutdown level.2. Shutdown by simultaneously closing the fuel valve, deactivating the shutdown devices, breather motor andfuel gas compressors (if applicable). The ignition can be left on for 3-5 seconds after shutdown to burnany unburned fuel.3. Post lube the engine for a period of five minutes. This prevents the turbocharger from running dry duringcoast down and also prevents coking damage to the turbocharger bearings from heat soak. Operation of apost cooling water pump for five minutes uniformily cools the engine and prevents thermal shock.Postlube of the engine is mandatory for the ATGL engine.NOTE: A starter lockout is recommended when the engine is down.Emergency Shutdown Logic – Gas Compression1. Shutdown by simultaneously disengaging load (if possible), closing the fuel valve and turning off theignition, breather motor and fuel gas compressors.Starting Logic – Power Generation and Other1. Prior to cranking the engine the control logic must provide a five-minute prelube before engine starting ora two-minute prelube every hour for standby applications. Normal prelube pressure at oil header is25 PSIG. Minimum lube oil flow rate is 30 GPM.2. Activate the overspeed control and electric governor prior to cranking. The overspeed control will assureprotection from overspeed and the governor is powered to open the butterfly valve and allow air flow topurge the engine while cranking.3. Initiate cranking with the ignition on and the gas valve closed. Allow 3-5 seconds before opening the gasvalve to allow for a purge cycle in the engine. Fresh air pumped through the engine will aid in removingany unburned air/fuel mixture from a previous shutdown or previous start attempt. The purge cycle helpsto reduce the possibility of exhaust explosions.NOTE: Minimum cranking speed is 100 RPM. Activate the breather motor upon cranking. Engine fuel supply compressors to be started prior to crankinitiation.
