In general, signals emitted by apoptotic cells include two categories: soluble molecules and complex extracellular vesicles. Nucleotides, such as adenosine triphosphate and uridine triphosphate, are the most well-known find-me signals. These nucleotides are released in the environment by apoptotic cells through the pannexin-1 channel. Recent studies have shown that some oxidative stress mediators may act as find-me signals by triggering monocyte recruitment toward suffering cells at risk of death. The release of oxidative stress mediators is probably a physiological mechanism to employ phagocytes in a precautionary state before cell death occurs, even though it might also promote the pathogenesis of some diseases
