Simultaneous advancement of the maxilla and mandible changes the skeletal framework of the face, thereby resulting in a possible rejuvenation of the middle and lower third of the face. This concept of a “reverse face lift” with positive effects on facial aesthetics following MMA surgery in OSA patients is observed in the majority of patients (Fig. 8.88). Li et al found that 6 months after surgery, 50% of patients reported a younger and 36% reported a more attractive facial appearance. It should be noted that 9% of the patients in this study reported a less attractive facial appearance following surgery. Conversely, in two other studies OSA patients indicated not to be bothered by their appearance fol- lowing MMA surgery.
