②Basic definitionNonverbal communication:“is the transmission of messages through nonlinguistic behaviors, either consciously or unconsciously, such as nonverbal cues , behaviors , space , and many other factors. During a communication event , the receiver also uses nonlinguistic behaviors to interpret the meaning of the message”.Samovar and Porter define nonverbal communication as “communication that involves all nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting that is generated by both the source and his or her use of the environment and that has potential message value for the source or receiver”. Nonverbal communication dose not necessarily happen on its own , in fact , it simultaneously takes place as when verbal communication is taking place. However,it can occur without the presence of words.Nonverbal communication is simply known as the “silent”language or the “hidden dimension”of communication, however you and I already know all about it ! There are many factors that influence nonverbal communication,so for the rest of the lesson we will focus specifically on kinesics and paralanguage. Kinesics , or body language, refers to all nonverbal codes , which are associated with body movements.Body movements can include posture, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and other displays. For example if I stand like this how would you interpret my posture? If I shrug my shoulders, what dose it mean? All of these actions are me sending nonverbal messages!
