By the time Stewart became eighteen years of age, his siblings were well along in their schooling, and he decided to return to school himself. Encouraged by the family doctor to study medicine, he completed four years in high school in eighteen months and then went to Vancouver, B.C. to begin his pre-medical studies. Upon completing his undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia, he returned to Montreal for medical school at McGill University. In those days, UBC was affiliated with McGill, but did not have a medical school.
