Here is a very solid example of the same type .The curved back rail ,here rectangular and giving an effect of much strength ,descends to the chair seat in an unbroken curve so as to from both back and arms in one .It is nevertheless quite adequately supported by the splat and by a single pair of uprights at the rear corners .The low-relief lotus ornament on this splat is in traditional style ,ingeniously carved so as to seem half inset .Note how flexible and pliable the wood of the rail is made to appear ,its flowing lines and multiple curvature presenting no apparent problem to the craftsman .The seat is of polished wood instead of cane on a wood base ;and front stretcher serves ,as usual ,for a footrest .As in other examples ,it shows that it has been worn with time .Careful housewives used to cover this crosspiece with a section of curved bamboo ,which was snapped or tied into place ,in order to prevent undue scuffing ,but it could be removed before the arrival of honored guests .
