Such an undertaking is found only in Thucydides; since this ultimate triumph of reasoning was entirely committed to confronting the problems of history, it attained its limits: reason can go no further without corrupting history. But this limit is exactly what could have been predicted from the tendency itself of the rest of the work; and this exception is exactly the one that best proves the rule.
